Interim Leadership and Executive Search for MediaSpace

Mediaspace is a leading integrated media agency in Minnetonka MN. They’ve built a national reputation as a trusted partner, with a strong focus on working with news and magazine publishers.

The Opportunity

In 2017 the ownership team knew they needed to accelerate their digital offerings, but they also knew they had to do something different to breakthrough. They wanted to build a differentiated, hard to replicate Digital offering by building on their core strengths: deep partnerships with leading publishers, highly efficient operations, and a reputation for being able to handle challenging media asks.

But, to accelerate the change, the leadership team knew they’d have to transform their structure, their key roles, and the approach. They also realized they couldn’t do it on their own.

Our Solution

Fahren was engaged to lead the development of the new digital strategy, provide interim leadership to set up the new team and support the team during the search and onboarding of the permanent leader.

Over the course of the engagement, we provided the following services:

  • Strategic Planning – We led a collaborative planning process across the leadership team to create alignment on a new vision for the Mediaspace digital offerings, agreement on performance targets and a set of high-level operational & cultural priorities
  • Advisory Services – We led the development of a new financial plan for the digital business, including a revised P&L. Furthermore, we developed talent and organizational model to support the new plan and a staffing plan to bring the required skills and talent into the organization over time.
  • Interim Leadership – We placed an interim leader in the new role of Vice President of Innovation for the agency. In the interim period, our leader re-established the process and tools to support the renovated digital media model.
  • Executive Search – We supported the search for the permanent leader who would take the digital offering to the next level. Fahren developed the job description, recruited and screened candidates, and helped the leadership team at MediaSpace build a compensation model for the Vice President of Digital Media

Mediaspace is moving ahead faster than ever. They’ve doubled their digital business and the new team is growing. Their clients are pleased and the team is on their way to building a truly differentiated offering.
